Dr. Gavino C. Trono, Jr. receives “Gold Seaweed Award”

Dr. Gavino C. Trono, Jr. was awarded with the first ever “Gold Seaweed Award” by the Seaweed Industry Association of the Philippines (SIAP) during the 3rd International Seaweed Congress on November 21, 2014 held at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu. The special award was given in honor of his significant contribution in tropical marine phycology and the development of seaweed farming. He has also been dubbed as the “Father of Kappaphycus Farming”.

The two-day event, which is held every two years, followed the theme “Breaking Barriers in Environmental, Health, Socio-economic, and Political Challenges.” Over 700 participants from Asia and Europe attended, with speakers from various countries and sectors of the seaweed industry. Dr. Trono was also given a plaque of appreciation for his talk on the “Development of Seaweed Farming Techniques in the ASEAN Region,” which he delivered during the technical session of the congress.
